Cyst & Lipoma Removal
Dermatology
What is the Difference Between a Lipoma and a Cyst?
Lipomas and cysts are common, typically benign, collections of cells that can be treated or removed with the help of a skilled dermatologist. If you’ve been diagnosed with one of these skin conditions and want to learn more about the treatments available to you, schedule an appointment with Astral Skin World.
Distinguishing Lipomas from Cysts
While you’ll need a trained dermatologist to properly identify any alarming bumps you might have, you can get a better idea of whether your blemish is a cyst or a lipoma by asking yourself these questions:
- How Close is the Lump to the Surface? Cysts tend to be closer to the skin’s surface, whereas lipomas are generally found more deeply beneath the skin.
- How Does it Feel? Cysts are often firm without excessive movement while lipomas, being primarily comprised of fatty tissue, are softer and can feel rubbery when pressed.
- How Does the Skin Look? Cysts can leave the skin red, irritated, and cause swelling in the area surrounding them. Lipomas are typically not irritated.
- How Large is it? While both lipomas and cysts can look similar, cysts are usually smaller, slow growing, and found on the head and neck. Lipomas can be larger, are also generally slow growing, and often appear on the shoulders, neck, chest, arms, back, buttocks, and thighs.
Treating Cysts
If a cyst isn’t bothering you, your dermatologist may advise you to leave it alone. If you find it irritating, or it is in a conspicuous area, treatment may be recommended and would likely consist of:
- Injection – The dermatologist may choose to inject a cyst with medication to reduce swelling and redness.
- Drainage – The doctor can make an incision in the cyst and squeeze the contents out, reducing swelling and inflammation. Cysts often recur after this method, however.
- Surgery – The doctor may elect to perform minor surgery to remove the entire cyst. This would likely require a second visit to remove the stitches, but is otherwise minor.
- Laser Treatment – Carbon dioxide lasers can be used to vaporize the cyst, which can lead to minor scarring.
Treating Lipomas: Lipomas are typically benign and require no treatment unless they cause pain or disfigurement. If your dermatologist chooses to remove the lipoma, it would likely be done as a minor outpatient surgery that would require an incision, removal of the growth, and several stitches to close the wound.
